'The arses on the trousers aren't very tight. They're very loose and baggy and I like tight trousers. And the shoes - the shoes have got a bit of a heel, and it's a strange sensation for a man. Especially when you're running.' He mimes a mincing trot. 'I am mighty Hornblower! Watch me run like a girl!' On his Titanic experience: "Yeah, I was lucky because I didn't have to spend hours in freezing water. There weren't many people my age on set so Kate, Leo and I hung out together. We would pile into Leo's dressing room, which was full of PlayStations, mini basketball hoops and the like." On Horatio Hornblower: "I think people are attracted to the character because he's not a hero in the traditional sense. He's not a natural leader, he's just a young man with a very bright mind. He's compassionate, he hates injustice and he will stand up and fight when he's pushed to the limit." "I'm determined not to lose my name. It's who I am. It has neither aided my progress nor hampered it. It's just who I am. My character. . . My make-up. My culture and heritage is a very rich one. So what if it's difficult for people to pronounce? We all learned how to say Schwarzenegger." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Salary Man and Boy (2002) (TV) £150,000 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Filmography as: Actor, Notable TV guest appearances -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Actor - filmography (2000s) (1990s) (1980s) Gathering, The (2002) "Forsyte Saga, The" (2002) (mini) TV Series .... At 16, he left Crieff and Morrison Academy to join the Perth Repertory Theatre. His parents encouraged him to leave school and pursue his acting goals rather than be unhappy. McGregor studied drama for a year at Kirkcaldly in Fife, then enrolled at London's Guildhall School of Music and Drama for a three-year course. He left right before graduating after snagging the role of Private Mick Hopper in Dennis Potter's 1993 six-part Channel 4 series Lipstick on Your Collar (1993) (TV). His first notable role was that of Alex Law in Shallow Grave (1994), directed by Danny Boyle, written by John Hodge (I) and produced by Andrew MacDonald (I). This was followed by Pillow Book, The (1996) and Trainspotting (1996), the latter of which brought him to the public's attention. He is now one of the most critically acclaimed actors of his generation, and portrays Obi-wan Kenobi in the first three Star Wars episodes. McGregor is married to French production designer Eve Mavrakis, whom he met while working on the TV show "Kavanagh QC" (1994). They married in France in the summer of 1995 and have two daughters, Clara Mathilde and Esther Rose. McGregor has formed a production company with friends Jonny Lee Miller, Sean Pertwee, Jude Law and Sadie Frost. Called Natural Nylon, they hope it will make innovative films that do not conform to Hollywood standards. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Spouse Eve Mavrakis (July 1995 - present) -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Trivia Former roommate of Jude Law. (October 1997) Ranked #36 in Empire (UK) magazine's "The Top 100 Movie Stars of All Time" list. Nephew of Denis Lawson. Daughters, Clara Mathilde and Esther Rose. Born at 3:45pm-CET He met his wife while filming for "Kavanagh QC" (1994). Was originally up for the lead role in Beach, The (2000), which would have reunited him with director Danny Boyle and screenwriter John Hodge (I) who collaborated with McGregor on Shallow Grave (1994), Trainspotting (1996) and Life Less Ordinary, A (1997). The role went to Leonardo DiCaprio. While McGregor blames studio influence for the casting descision he has not spoken to either Boyle nor Hodge since. Originally auditioned for the role of Mercutio in the 1996 film Romeo + Juliet (1996). He later got his chance to work with "Romeo" director Baz Luhrmann when he was cast as Christian in Moulin Rouge! (2001). In the film Moulin Rouge! (2001) McGregor sang alongside Nicole Kidman. (5 July 2001) Was presented with an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster at a graduation ceremony in Belfast, Northern Ireland. His first name is pronounced "you-in". Ewan says that he was inspired to get into show business by his uncle, actor Denis Lawson. Lawson played Wedge Antilles in Episodes 4-6 of Star Wars. Daughter Esther Rose born 7 November 2001 in London, England, UK. Being considered by Chris Columbus to play Remus Lupin in the third Harry Potter sequel, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004). Ewan was slated to start filming 'Nautic' in Jamaica with Heath Ledger in a couple of months. However Ted Demme, who was picked to direct the film died suddenly at the age of 38 from a heart attack while playing basketball. Early career dedicated almost exclusively to indie, low-budget, and non-feature films. When cast as Obi-wan Kenobi in Star Wars, Episode I: The Phantom Menace, an interviewer reminded him of his "aversion" to major films, and he replied "I know what I said, but, hey! This is Star Wars!" Ewan MacGregor ranked eighth in the 2001 Orange Film Survey of greatest British actors. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Personal quotes "Actually, I really want to play Princess Leia. Stick some big pastries on my head. Now, that would be interesting." "I'm doing my bit for the women's movement. The women have always been naked in movies and now I'm just desperate to take my clothes off as much as possible." "I've been waiting nearly twenty years to have my own light saber. Nothing's cooler than being a Jedi Knight." "Isn't Halle Berry the most beautiful woman? I have a film I'd like to be in her with. I mean, I'd like to be with her in." - At the 2002 Golden Globe Awards commenting to Melissa Rivers on Halle Berry, who just walked by. "It's a great feeling of power to be naked in front of people. We're happy to watch actual incredible graphic violence and gore, but as soon as somebody's naked it seems like the public goes a bit bananas about the whole thing." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Where are they now (March 2002) Since 2001 Ewan has been the star of the AEON English language school ads (a huge English school chain), in Japan, replacing Cameron Diaz as the star of the ads, in posters and press ads. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Errors and omissions on this page may be reported to the IMDb editors by pressing the button below where they will be examined and, if accepted, included in a future update.
