Matthew BowlesOccupation: Master Hobbies: Advising Horatio on the articles of war Navigator of both the ship and Horatio’s career, ensuring both stay on a steady course. Bowles can be a stickler for the proper way of doing things, and keeps the junior officers in line. |
BracegirdleOccupation: First Lieutenant and wet nurse to the junior officers Hobbies: Doing Horatio’s laundry Not only is Bracey responsible for the general day to day operation and administration of the Indefatigable, but he is also apparently responsible for ensuring that none of the young gentlemen leave the ship without clean stockings, uniforms or hankies. |
Katherine Cobham aka Kitty Cobham aka the Duchess of WharfedaleOccupation: actress and amateur spy Hobbies: Flirting with pretty young Acting-Lieutenants Captain Pellew is more than happy to offload the Duchess on Horatio, but she proves a strong, loyal and quickwitted ally during his captivity. |
|
Clayton Occupation: Midshipman and ally Hobbies: Drowning sorrows in gin A fellow victim of the sadistic Jack Simpson, Clayton is shamed by Horatio into making a fatal stand against Simpson, taking Horatio’s place in a duel with Simpson. Simpson wins. |
Lord EdringtonOccupation: Major. An officer and a gentleman Hobbies: Putting Horatio gently in his place Blonde, handsome, moneyed, aristocratic, Edrington is the perfect image of a British Army Officer. He takes a measure of Horatio and regards him as passionate, naive, but worthy of his friendship, nonetheless. |
|
Dreadnought Foster Occupation: Captain and hard bastard Hobbies: Killing crew who dare disagree with him Horatio’s hero is certainly brave and daring, but he’s also callous and careless with human life and takes the point of honour to a dangerous degree. |
|
Henrietta Occupation: Ship's Chicken; providing eggs and meat Hobbies: Being caught by French Royalists and rescued by Styles and subsequently saved from him by Horatio. She's a fine figure of a bird, and has been known to catch many a man's eye, especially if he's a breast man. Her longevity is due to her relationship with Styles and the amnesty granted to her by Horatio. This bird really knows how to party, and the feathers fly when she and Styles are together, although she loves to be cuddled under his arm! |
Horatio HornblowerOccupation: Midshipman/Lieutenant. Hero Hobbies: Self doubt and being impossibly cute Sent to sea at seventeen, Horatio is the new kid on the block and is quickly shown the pecking order aboard the Justinian. After reaching the pit of despair, Horatio confronts Simpson, but Clayton takes his place in the duel. Horatio is then given his first command, of a prize ship, by Pellew. He looses the ship, but gains the respect of his division. After an action Simpson is picked up by the Indy, and picks up where he left off in terrorising the lads, casting Archie adrift and shooting Horatio. Horatio is rescued and orders Simpson put under arrest. Being forced to take command of the Papillon, Horatio manages to save the Indy. He fights his duel with Simpson, but Simpson is killed by the Captain, not Horatio. Horatio overcomes plagues, hero worship, fire ships, flirtatious actresses, imprisonment and losing a minor French fancy along the way to gaining his commission becoming a young man admired and adored by all who know him. |
|
Captain Keene Captain of the Justinian Hobbies: Long suffering illnesses with mysterious symptoms, letting Simpson run amok on the ship Keene was Horatio's first Captain, and serves as a contrast for the orderly command style of Pellew. Keene has a cutting wit when he chooses to show it, and does know his trade; he is just too ill to be an active leader. Horatio and Archie suffer because of his negligence, but he does redeem himself in the end by arranging to transfer Horatio to the Indy and encouraging him to go and make a name for himself. He is killed in the same attack that sees Simpson join the Indy. |
Archie KennedyOccupation: Midshipman and sidekick Hobbies: Bedtime fits and angst Friend and foil to Horatio. Cute as a button and subsequently much abused by the evil Jack Simpson aboard the HMS Justinian, Archie now displays all the hallmarks of PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), often having dramatic episodes at really inconvenient moments. Though giving voice to a certain degree of bitterness towards Horatio at his lowest point, Archie remains a loyal friend, willing to risk his life to save Horatio’s. |
MatthewsOccupation: Able Seaman and ally Hobbies: Keeping the rest of the boys in line He's been at sea longer than Horatio has been alive, and he's happy to discreetly provide small prompts for Horatio so the boy doesn't make a fool of himself. Matthew regards Horatio as a decent officer, worthy of his loyalty and support. |
|
Oldroyd Occupation: Seaman Hobbies: Being the butt of every body else's' jokes Cute but as thick as two planks, Oldroyd is as new to the Royal Navy as his immediate officers are, and he's still learning the ropes, literally. |
Sir Edward PellewOccupation: Captain and mentor Hobbies: Fretting on the quarterdeck everytime Horatio goes off on an adventure Based on the real historical Cornishman, it is unknown if the actual Pellew ever formed such an attachment to his young Lieutenant. Pellew becomes Horatio’s mentor and initiator into the rites of adulthood. Pellew uses his influence to give Horatio’s career the lifts and opportunities to make something of himself. In the process Pellew becomes very very fond of his young protoge and worries about him a good deal. |
Jack SimpsonOccupation: Midshipman and bully Hobbies: Lying, cheating, duelling, playing pranks, terrorising and abusing the other midshipmen Aggressive and brutal, Jack is a midshipman with no career prospects and he vents his bitterness by bullying the other junior officers. So bad was his reign of terror that Archie, Clayton and Horatio all consider suicide at some point. After unsuccessful, though not for want of trying, attempts to kill both Horatio and Archie, Simpson is eventually killed by Captain Pellew whilst attempting to stab Horatio in the back after an inconclusive duel. |
|
Styles Occupation: Able Seaman Hobbies: Pest and animal control Very much a diamond in the rough, a little blood thirsty, Styles was probably recruited from gaol and is a good man to have beside you on a boarding party, but not necessarily behind you. |
