~ Valentine 1789 ~

Feb. 14, 1789

Dearest Mother,

All my love I send to you, on this the day of Saint Valentine. I am so happy here on my new ship. You'll be glad to know that able officers and a good crew, not like the previous ship, man Justinian, where I am fast learning the ropes. Twice I've run errands for Captain Keene. He has praised my efforts each time. I did my best, Mother, because I want you to be proud of me.

Now, I must tell you of my dearest friend and brave companion who from the first day welcomed me with warm kindness aboard our ship. His name is Jack and he has taken me under his wing. Not a day goes by that Jack doesn't save me from some misfortune. He is my protector and my tutor for all things nautical.

You would love him too, Mother. Jack is going to be made lieutenant soon. He is studying for his examination and I know he will pass easily. He is very wise and he has my best interests at heart. He has warned me against becoming friendly with several of the other midshipmen, especially a fellow named Clayton who is quite a drinker, I hear.

Since I've been aboard only a few weeks, I wish to make no hasty judgments for or against any man. Yet, I think Jack and I will be inseparable. We are much alike, both growing up in good homes. He is the foster son of Sir Henry Simmerson who Uncle Andrew met at Horse Guards. Remember? Sir Henry asked if I wanted to join his new regiment and be his personal aide with the rank of ensign.

I'm glad I declined the offer. Jack said we are both much better off in the Navy. Life in the Army is dirty and exhausting compared to our tasks here on the finest of his Majesty's ships of the line. Besides, everyone in the Army must provide his own living. We, on the other hand, expect prize money which will make us all rich. Then, I'll take you home to Scotland, Mother. Jack and I will protect you. You'll see.

Your loving son,

Archie
